Step 1: Preheat oven to 350F. Cream butter & sugar together. Add eggs.
Step 2: Blend in flour & buttermilk in alternating additions, starting & ending w/the flour. Add baking soda mixture, followed by chocolate & vanilla extract.
Step 3: Pour batter into 1 9x12-in pan or 2 round 9-in springform pans. Bake for 30 min or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven & allow to cool.
Step 4: Combine all frosting ingredients in a saucepan, bring to a full boil & boil for 2 min. Let cool. You can put saucepan on ice if cooling quickly is desired.
Step 5: Remove the cake from the pan, frost & serve.
