Step 1: Brown the sausage in a medium skillet over medium heat, drain well, and set aside.
Step 2: Combine the cornmeal and the next 5 ingredients in a large bowl; stir well.
Step 3: Pour half the batter into a greased 10-inch skillet. Arrange the sausage on top of the batter; sprinkle with 3/4 cup of the shredded cheese. Spread the remaining half of the batter over the cheese.
Step 4: Bake at 450 degrees for 25 minutes; sprinkle with the remaining 3/4 cup cheese.
Step 5: Bake an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese melts.
