Step 1: Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
Step 2: Grease 9x13 pan.
Step 3: Combine sugar, oil and eggs; beat mixture until smooth and creamy.
Step 4: Sift together dry ingredients, add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture; mix until smooth.
Step 5: Stir nuts, dates and vanilla.
Step 6: Turn batter into pan.
Step 7: Bake at 300 degrees for 45-55 minutes.
Step 8: Cool cake in pan and serve.
