The ingredients are:
  • 2 pounds beef chuck (roast)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper
  • 4 carrots, diced
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 1/2 pounds potatoes (4 potatoes)
  • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seed

How to Make

  • Step 1: Cut beef into 1 inch squares.

  • Step 2: Brown chopped onion in butter; add paprika and fry slightly; do not brown paprika.

  • Step 3: Add cubed beef, salt and pepper; simmer until tender in its own juices, being careful not to scorch.

  • Step 4: Add carrots and water and simmer until carrots are partly cooked.

  • Step 5: Add potatoes; cook until potatoes are done, for about 1 hour.

  • Step 6: Serve with dumplings if desired.
