Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 cups milk (scalded)
  • 4 egg yolks (beaten)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 package (6 ounce) chocolate chips
  • 1 baked (9 inch) pastry shell (cooled)
  • 1 envelope (1/4 ounce) unflavored gelatin
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

How to Make

  • Step 1: Combine 1/2 cup sugar and cornstarch in the top of a double boiler. Slowly add scalded milk to beaten egg yolks; stir into sugar mixture.

  • Step 2: Cook and stir in top of double boiler over hot, but not boiling, water until custard coats spoon.

  • Step 3: Remove from heat and add vanilla to 1 cup of the custard.

  • Step 4: Add the chocolate chips and stir until melted.

  • Step 5: Pour this mixture into the bottom of the baked and cooled pie shell; chill.

  • Step 6: Meanwhile soften gelatin in cold water; add remaining hot custard; stir until dissolved. Chill until slightly thick.

  • Step 7: Beat egg whites until soft peaks form; beat in 1/2 cup sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form. Fold in the custard gelatin mixture. Pile over chocolate layer; chill until set.
