  • 2 1/4 ounces yeast
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 to 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups oats
  • 4 tablespoons shortening

How to Make

  • Step 1: Soften yeast in warm water with honey.

  • Step 2: Combine milk and water and shortening. Scald.

  • Step 3: Mix in sugar and salt. Stir until melted.

  • Step 4: When lukewarm, add 2 cups flour. Add yeast mixture, then oats.

  • Step 5: Add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead until smooth and satiny (about 10 minutes).

  • Step 6: Place in greased bowl and brush top with melted shortening, let rise 1 hour.

  • Step 7: Punch down let rest 10 minutes.

  • Step 8: Shape into 2 loaves in greased 9 by 5 by 3 inch pans.

  • Step 9: Brush with melted shortening. Let rise about 45 minutes.

  • Step 10: Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.
