  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plain flour, reserve 1/2 cup flour for dredging cut up orange candy, dates, coconut, and pecans)
  • 1 pound candy orange slices (cut fine)
  • 1 pound dates, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 2 cups chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ORANGE SAUCE
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • Dash salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

How to Make

  • Step 1: Cream butter and sugar.

  • Step 2: Add eggs and beat well.

  • Step 3: In a separate large bowl, with your hands, combine RESERVED 1/2 cup flour with orange candy, dates, coconut, and pecans.

  • Step 4: Preheat oven to 250F.

  • Step 5: Grease and flour a 10-inch tube pan.

  • Step 6: Combine buttermilk and baking soda.

  • Step 7: Add flour and buttermilk mixture alternately. Mix well.

  • Step 8: Stir in dredged fruit and nuts.

  • Step 9: Pour batter into a prepared 10-inch tube pan.

  • Step 10: Bake at 250F for 3 hours.

  • Step 11: Prepare Orange Sauce:

  • Step 12: Heat juice and dash of salt; add sugar and stir until sugar melts.

  • Step 13: Pour hot sauce over hot cake (while still in tube pan) - poke a few holes in cake so the sauce soaks into the cake.

  • Step 14: Cool completely before removing from pan.

  • Step 15: Slice thinly to serve.
