Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 1/2 cups water, warm
  • 2 packages (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (divided)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup melted shortening
  • FOR OPTIONAL TOPPING
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons honey

How to Make

  • Step 1: These can either be made in the mixer or by hand. If by hand, use a large bowl.

  • Step 2: Pour water into mixing bowl, add yeast and a pinch of sugar, let stand for a few minutes.

  • Step 3: Stir to dissolve and add half the flour, sugar, salt and egg. Stir, then add melted shortening. Mix well, then stir in remaining flour by hand.

  • Step 4: Cover bowl and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.

  • Step 5: Grease 18 large muffin cups. Stir batter and spoon into muffin cups, filling 1/2 full. Batter will look messy, that's okay.

  • Step 6: Let rise in warm place until batter reaches top of muffin cups, about 20-30 minutes.

  • Step 7: Bake at 425 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes, or until done. Prepare topping a few minutes before rolls will be done and brush on top right after removing rolls from oven. Serve warm.
