Step 1: Cream shortening and brown sugar together. Add egg. Add molasses.
Step 2: Sift flour, baking soda, salt, cloves, cinnamon and ginger together; add to creamed mixture.
Step 3: Chill dough overnight.
Step 4: Roll in balls the size of a walnut.
Step 5: Roll on sugar.
Step 6: Place on pan; put 3 drops of water on each ball.
Step 7: Bake just until set, but not hard, at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes.
