  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 2 2/3 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 can (16 ounce) pumpkin
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2/3 cup nuts, chopped

How to Make

  • Step 1: Grease inside of 8 (1 pint) wide mouth canning jars.

  • Step 2: Cream shortening with sugar. Beat in eggs, pumpkin, and water.

  • Step 3: Combine flour, spices, baking soda and powder. Add to pumpkin mixture.

  • Step 4: Stir in nuts.

  • Step 5: Pour into jars until 1/2 full.

  • Step 6: Bake uncovered for 45 minutes at 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Step 7: When done, remove jars and wipe down.

  • Step 8: Seal with new lids; the heat will seal the jars.
