Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons butter, divided and softened
  • 1 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon + 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, divided
  • 2 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon mace
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee (dissolved in 2 tablespoons boiling water)
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup dates, chopped
  • 2 cups walnuts, chopped (can use more)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • Enough milk to thin for glazing

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

  • Step 2: In a large bowl or using your stand mixer cream together 1 cup butter, dark brown sugar, eggs, and 1 teaspoon vanilla.

  • Step 3: Add the spices, instant coffee, and flour and mix well.

  • Step 4: Fold in raisins, dates, and walnuts.

  • Step 5: Spread into a greased cookie sheet bar pan.

  • Step 6: Bake for 12-15 minutes.

  • Step 7: Frosting: Beat together powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons butter and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Thin with milk.

  • Step 8: Frost bars when completely cooled.
