Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • FOR CRUST
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted (1 stick)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • FOR FILLING
  • 3 pounds apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (about half a lemon’s worth)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • FOR STREUSEL
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup walnuts, chopped (or pecans)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt, pinch
  • FOR GLAZE
  • 2 ounces cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk (if needed)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 F.

  • TO MAKE THE CRUST

  • Step 2: Mix dry ingredients together with a fork or whisk in mixing bowl.

  • Step 3: Drizzle in oil, butter and milk and continue to stir until dough forms.

  • Step 4: Press evenly into half sheet pan (18x13), coming halfway up the sides.

  • TO MAKE THE FILLING

  • Step 5: In a large bowl, toss sliced apples, lemon juice, sugars, flour, cinnamon and allspice.

  • Step 6: Spread filling evenly over crust. It will look very full, but will cook down.

  • TO MAKE THE STREUSEL

  • Step 7: Mix together flour, sugar, oats and nuts; cut in butter until loose and crumbly.

  • Step 8: Add egg and mix until crumbly dough forms.

  • Step 9: Crumble streusel dough evenly over filling.

  • Step 10: Bake at 350F for 60 minutes, or until bubbly around edges.

  • Step 11: Allow to cool at least one hour before adding glaze.

  • Step 12: For the glaze: Beat softened butter and cream cheese together with whisk or mixer; add in sugar and vanilla extract and continue to mix slowly until creamy.

  • Step 13: Add in milk until desired consistency forms. (it should be about the consistency of cinnamon roll frosting)

  • Step 14: Using whisk or spoon, drizzle glaze evenly over top of baked and cooled bars. Allow to set 30 minutes before serving.
