Step 1: Place the garlic and Montreal steak spice in a pestle and work into a paste with the mortar.
Step 2: Sprinkle fresh ground pepper over steaks and rub the paste over all sides with a spatula; let sit for 5 minutes.
Step 3: Grill the steaks over direct medium-high heat until cooked to desired doneness. I cooked these 2" thick steaks for 5 minutes per side and they were perfectly medium-rare.
