Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • FOR THE CAKE
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup butter (or margarine, 2 sticks of butter or margarine)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs (beaten)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • FOR THE FROSTING
  • 1/2 cup butter (or margarine)
  • 6 tablespoons milk (I used skim milk)
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Powdered sugar (the original recipe states 1 box, but I only had less than 2 cups, so that is what I used)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

How to Make

  • Step 1: Grease and flour a 9 x 13 inch pan.

  • Step 2: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

  • Step 3: In a large bowl combine the flour and sugar.

  • Step 4: In a saucepan combine the cocoa, water and butter or margarine. Heat to boiling, stirring. Add to the flour and sugar mixture, blending well.

  • Step 5: In a medium bowl beat the eggs. In a separate bowl and stir soda into the buttermilk. Add eggs and vanilla to the buttermilk mixture.

  • Step 6: Stir liquid mixture into the dry mixture.

  • Step 7: Pour into pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until cake tests done.

  • Step 8: To make the frosting: in a saucepan , melt the butter or margarine and add cocoa and milk. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Stir in powdered sugar and vanilla. Mix well. Let cool and then pour over cake, spreading evenly.
