Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs (dry, unseasoned)
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 3 tablespoons butter (or margarine)
  • Pinch black pepper
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons garlic salt (divided)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups mashed potato flakes
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • Cooked crumbled bacon
  • Sliced green onions

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 375°F.

  • Step 2: In medium bowl, mix the ground beef with 1 teaspoon garlic salt, bread crumbs, chopped onion, ketchup and mustard. Press mixture in bottom and up sides of greased 9-inch pie plate. Bake 15 minutes.

  • Step 3: In medium saucepan, place water, butter, 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt and a pinch of black pepper. Heat to boiling. Remove from heat, stir in whole milk, then stir in potato flakes. Stir in 1/2 cup of the cheddar cheese.

  • Step 4: Remove partially baked beef crust from oven; pour off any drippings. Spoon potato mixture evenly into crust. Return to oven; bake 10 to 15 minutes longer or until beef is thoroughly cooked and thermometer placed in center of crust reads 160°F, and potatoes are hot.

  • Step 5: Remove pie from oven. Top with chopped tomato, remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon; bake 5 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Remove from oven; top with green onions. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
