Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • FOR THE MEATBALLS
  • 2 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup bread crumbs (soft)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, minced
  • 1 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
  • FOR THE SAUCE
  • 1 pound hot Italian sausage links, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 medium yellow onions, chopped (or one jumbo onion)
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
  • 4 to 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine
  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) Italian plum tomatoes, drained and diced
  • 2 cans (8 ounces each) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) beef broth
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • Pepper to taste
  • Cooked spaghetti
  • Parmesan cheese, grated

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a bowl, combine all the meatball ingredients. Shape into 18-20 meatballs. Brown in a Dutch oven over medium heat; drain and set meatballs aside. (you can freeze some meatballs or use them all).

  • Step 2: In the same pan, cook sliced sausages, onion and green pepper until vegetables are tender; drain. Add in the minced garlic and cook 1 minute or a little more. Add in wine, stir for 3 minutes.

  • Step 3: Add the tomatoes, tomato sauce, broth, tomato paste, and seasonings. Bring to a medium simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cook 20 minutes stirring often.

  • Step 4: Add meatballs; stir gently. Bring back to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 2-3 hours. Season again with more salt if needed.

  • Step 5: Serve over hot cooked spaghetti; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
