Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 4 cups French bread, cubed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup raisins, optional (or dried cranberries)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Butter (or use cooking spray) a 1 1/2 quart casserole (7 1/2 inch). Preheat oven to 350F.

  • Step 2: Heat milk and butter to scalding.

  • Step 3: Place bread cubes in a large bowl and pour milk and butter mixture over bread, making sure all the bread is soaked. Let cool slightly.

  • Step 4: In another bowl, lightly beat eggs and add sugars, salt and spices.

  • Step 5: Pour this mixture over bread and milk and stir in raisins (or dried cranberries). Mix well.

  • Step 6: Pour mixture into prepared casserole and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a knife inserted into mixture comes out clean.

  • Step 7: Serve warm or at room temperature, with hard sauce or cream, if desired.
