Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 21/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 11/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cloves
  • 1/2 tsp salt

How to Make

  • Step 1: Cream butter and sugar together.

  • Step 2: Add beaten egg.

  • Step 3: Sift dry ingredients together.

  • Step 4: Mix the molasses and hot water.

  • Step 5: Add the wet and dry ingredients to the butter and sugar alternately, in about 3 or 4 additions, and beat well.

  • Step 6: Bake in an 8 or 9 inch square pan in a moderate oven (350° – 375°F) oven for 45 to 60 minutes, or until a broom straw (remember those?!) or a toothpick comes out clean.
