Step 1: Cream butter and sugar together.
Step 2: Add beaten egg.
Step 3: Sift dry ingredients together.
Step 4: Mix the molasses and hot water.
Step 5: Add the wet and dry ingredients to the butter and sugar alternately, in about 3 or 4 additions, and beat well.
Step 6: Bake in an 8 or 9 inch square pan in a moderate oven (350° – 375°F) oven for 45 to 60 minutes, or until a broom straw (remember those?!) or a toothpick comes out clean.
