Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 head (2 pounds) cabbage
  • 1 large (12 ounce) yellow onion (chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery salt
  • Pinch ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable stock
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 1 cup pasta sauce
  • 5 to 6 cups tomato juice (cocktail, enough to cover)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Bring cabbage to a boil in a large stockpot; boil for 30 minutes.

  • Step 2: Drain and allow cooling; slice into thin strips.

  • Step 3: Meanwhile, mix ground meat with onions, garlic, basil, salt, pepper, celery salt, ground cloves and Worcestershire sauce.

  • Step 4: Place meat in Dutch oven or heavy bottomed oven-proof pot, toss in bay leaves and add stock.

  • Step 5: Cook on medium heat until meat has browned.

  • Step 6: Drain liquid, remove and discard bay leaves and return to pot.

  • Step 7: Mix the remaining ingredients in with the meat, making sure you have enough of the tomato cocktail to completely cover the mixture.

  • Step 8: Cover pot and cook in a 400 degree Fahrenheit oven 2 hours, stirring halfway through.

  • Step 9: Remove from oven and serve.
