Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees; pour boiling water over quick oats and let stand until almost cool.
Step 2: Cream together shortening, sugars, eggs, cinnamon, salt and vanilla.
Step 3: Add cooled oatmeal, flour and baking soda dissolved in the warm water.
Step 4: Mix well; batter will be thin.
Step 5: Spray a 9 x 13 pan.
Step 6: Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 30 - 40 minutes.
Step 7: Topping: Have ready for when cake comes out of the oven.
Step 8: Combine all topping ingredients in saucepan.
Step 9: Bring all ingredients to a gentle boil and cook until thickened; about 3-5 minutes.
Step 10: Remove from heat and spread over hot cake as it comes out of the oven.
