Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 (28 ounce) cans Italian imported crushed tomatoes
  • 3 to 4 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 large onion, chopped
  • 1 cup finely shredded carrots
  • 1/2 cup fat-free chicken stock
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper, or to taste
  • Fresh chopped basil

How to Make

  • Step 1: Saute onions and carrots in oil over medium-high heat for about 2-3 minutes, until soft. Add garlic; cook 1 minute. Add crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, salt and pepper and simmer partially covered 1 to 1 1/4 hours on low heat, seasoning with more salt and pepper halfway through cooking time.

  • Step 2: Add fresh basil last 10 minutes (herbs will become bitter if cooked more than 20 minutes).

  • Step 3: Taste the sauce for acidity, if sauce is a bit tangy (acidic) then add 1 tbsp of sugar or for a calorie free way to cut the acidity in the sauce add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Any remaining sauce will freeze well.

  • Step 4: 1 cup sauce = 90 Calories with 1.8 grams fat. For Weight Watchers Old Points 1 -- Points+ 2 pts
