Step 1: Whisk flour and milk in the top of a double boiler until very smooth. Cook over simmering water, whisking constantly so it doesn't get lumpy, until thick. Remove from heat and let cool on counter.
Step 2: In a mixing bowl, cream softened butter and Crisco for 4 minutes.
Step 3: Add sugar gradually and beat another 4 minutes.
Step 4: Add thickened flour mixture and beat another 4 minutes till light and fluffy. Add vanilla and beat till mixed in. Frost your favorite cake.
