Step 1: In a large skillet over medium heat brown hamburger, drain off excess fat
Step 2: Add and lightly saute onions, celery and garlic. Place hamburger and sauted vegetables in a large soup pot
Step 3: Add the rest of ingredients, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer stirring occasionally for an hour or until vegetables are to desired tenderness If too thick,add more water
Step 4: NOTE - When making this for tonights supper, found I didn't happen to have a can of tomato sauce on hand. Surprised to find we prefer this with just the 28 ounce can tomatoes. I also use the optional sugar as I usually do when cooking with tomatoes and tomato sauces - it mellows the flavour of the tomatoes.
