Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 pound ground beef (hamburger)
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 1 to 2 garlic cloves, minced (optional)
  • 1 cup carrots, chopped
  • 6 beef bouillon cubes (or 6 teaspoons Beef Broth mix - I use Knorr)
  • 5 cups water
  • 16 ounces diced tomatoes (I use the 28 ounce can) (1 can)
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce (1 can)
  • 10 ounces corn, frozen (1 bag)
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon basil (I often use both basil and marjoram)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (or to taste)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (or to taste - optional)
We recommend you get your ingredients ready before you start cooking. Once you're ready, here are the steps to making this delicious recipe

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a large skillet over medium heat brown hamburger, drain off excess fat

  • Step 2: Add and lightly saute onions, celery and garlic. Place hamburger and sauted vegetables in a large soup pot

  • Step 3: Add the rest of ingredients, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer stirring occasionally for an hour or until vegetables are to desired tenderness If too thick, add more water

  • Step 4: NOTE - When making this for tonights supper, found I didn't happen to have a can of tomato sauce on hand. Surprised to find we prefer this with just the 28 ounce can tomatoes. I also use the optional sugar as I usually do when cooking with tomatoes and tomato sauces - it mellows the flavour of the tomatoes.
