Step 1: Soak the beans in water that covers them, adding more water as needed.
Step 2: Bring beans to boil.
Step 3: Turn off and cover for 1 hour.
Step 4: Simmer with spices except chili powder.
Step 5: Heat the garlic and onions until translucent
Step 6: Add chili powder
Step 7: Add to beans
Step 8: Add everything to taste,
Step 9: Adding water as needed; it's going to have strong flavor.
Step 10: Bring to boil.
Step 11: Reduce to simmer and cover for a couple hours or until tender.
Step 12: Remove lid to reduce to desired consistency. They are thick, don't burn them at this point.
Step 13: Remove bay leaves.
Step 14: Salt and pepper to taste.
Step 15: Add citrus juices to taste.
