  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Dry
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Slurry
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon water, hot

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350F.

  • Step 2: Cream shortening and sugars until light.

  • Step 3: Add egg and vanilla.

  • Step 4: Sift dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture.

  • Step 5: Mix hot water and baking soda and add to mixing bowl.

  • Step 6: Roll into 2 logs, and wrap it up in Saran wrap, freeze for 2 hours.

  • Step 7: Slice thinly and bake.

  • Step 8: Bake for 10 minutes until lightly browned, (watch, no time and/or temperature given; very old recipe).

  • Step 9: These make a good crisp cookie.
