Step 1: Preheat oven to 350F.
Step 2: Cream shortening and sugars until light.
Step 3: Add egg and vanilla.
Step 4: Sift dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture.
Step 5: Mix hot water and baking soda and add to mixing bowl.
Step 6: Roll into 2 logs, and wrap it up in Saran wrap, freeze for 2 hours.
Step 7: Slice thinly and bake.
Step 8: Bake for 10 minutes until lightly browned, (watch, no time and/or temperature given; very old recipe).
Step 9: These make a good crisp cookie.
