Step 1: Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Step 2: Sift the flour, salt, baking soda and cream of tartar into a large mixing bowl.
Step 3: Add the butter, then rub in with your fingers until the mix looks like fine crumbs.
Step 4: Add the golden syrup, beaten egg and buttermilk, and combine together
Step 5: Scatter some flour onto the work surface and tip the dough out, then fold the dough over 2 to 3 times until it’s a little smoother.
Step 6: Pat into a round shape about 2-inches high.
Step 7: Slice into four.
Step 8: Scatter some more flour on a baking sheet lined with parchment and place the scones closely together.
Step 9: Bake for 12 minutes.
Step 10: Cool slightly on a wire rack and serve warm.
