  • 1 teaspoon demerara sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon thyme, dried
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Vegetables
  • 1/2 cup white onions, chopped
  • 1/2 cup carrots, chopped
  • 1 cup cabbage, chopped
  • 16 ounces ham, cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

How to Make

  • Step 1: Place water in soup pot with hambone, navy beans and hominy.

  • Step 2: Bring to a boil.

  • Step 3: Cook for 2 hours.

  • Step 5: Add vegetables and meat, add water if needed.

  • Step 6: Cook for 30 minutes without lid.

  • Step 7: Take out bone and bay leaf.

  • Step 8: Season with salt and ground pepper to taste.
