  • 8 apples, Granny Smith, peeled, sliced
  • 1 cup maple sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup salt pork
  • 9 ounces pie crust (1 crust)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Core, peel, and slice at least 10 tart apples, and put into a deep pie plate (cast iron skillet) without a bottom crust.

  • Step 2: Sprinkle maple sugar, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, flour and a generous pinch of salt over the apples.

  • Step 3: Mix.

  • Step 4: Dot with about 10 tiny pieces of salt pork.

  • Step 5: Cover top with pie crust and bake in hot (400 degree oven) for 10 minutes, reducing heat to medium (350 degrees) for another half hour until browned.

  • Step 6: Let set to cool a bit before cutting.
