The ingredients are:
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 4 ounces white bread, stale, torn (4 slices)
  • 1/2 cup onion, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • Topping
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon dry ground mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 6 lemon slices

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

  • Step 2: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.

  • Step 3: In a large bowl, wet bread with water and lemon juice.

  • Step 4: Mix together the ground beef, egg, bread mixture, onion, pepper and seasoning salt to taste until well blended.

  • Step 5: Shape into 6 individual loaves.

  • Step 6: Place them in the prepared baking dish.

  • Step 7: Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven while you prepare the topping.

  • Step 8: Topping:

  • Step 9: In a small bowl, stir together the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard powder, allspice and cloves.

  • Step 10: Spoon the sauce over the loaves, then top each one with a slice of lemon.

  • Step 11: Return to the oven, and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until cooked through.
