Step 1: Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Step 2: Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together into mixing bowl.
Step 3: Whisk in cornmeal.
Step 4: Combine sugar and egg and beat until light.
Step 5: Add (sour milk) buttermilk, and shortening; combine slowly with dry ingredients.
Step 6: If milk is quite thick, a little more may be needed to thin batter.
Step 7: Stir only until ingredients are mixed.
Step 8: Grease(butter) pan (9 x 13 x 2) generously, and cover with thick sprinkling of cornmeal.
Step 9: Pour batter in pan, and bake in hot oven (425 degrees F.) about 25 minutes, or until nicely browned.
