Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 pound spaghetti, dry
  • 6 cups water boiling
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oil, divided
  • 5 ounces beef hot dogs, cut crosswise on a slight diagonal into 1/4-inch thick pieces (5)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (16 ounces)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 28 ounces tomato sauce (1 can)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • Topping
  • 8 ounces cheddar cheese, shredded

How to Make

  • Step 1: Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil.

  • Step 2: Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat until shimmering.

  • Step 3: Add 5 sliced hot dogs and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned all over, about 3 minutes.

  • Step 4: Using a slotted spoon, transfer to a medium bowl.

  • Step 5: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil and garlic cloves to the pan.

  • Step 6: Cook until lightly browned, about 30 seconds.

  • Step 7: Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 3 minutes.

  • Step 8: Add ground beef, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper to taste.

  • Step 9: Cook the meat to bite-size pieces, until browned 8 minutes.

  • Step 10: Add 2 tablespoons tomato paste and cook, stirring frequently, until the tomato paste is slightly caramelized, about 1 minute.

  • Step 11: Stir in the hot dogs, tomato sauce, 1 cup water rinsing out can, ketchup, soy sauce and fish sauce and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens,10 minutes.

  • Step 12: Meanwhile, add spaghetti to the boiling water and cook until al dente, drain and return to the pot.

  • Step 13: Add 3/4 of the sauce (about 5 cups) and toss until the pasta is evenly coated.

  • Step 14: Remove bay leaf and season to taste.

  • Step 15: Serve topped with the remaining sauce and shredded cheddar cheese.
