  • 1/2 cup margarine (1 stick)
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 4 tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Frosting
  • 1/2 cup margarine (1 stick)
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 16 ounces confectioners sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 400F.

  • Step 2: Put margarine, cooking oil, cocoa and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

  • Step 3: Sift together the flour and sugar.

  • Step 4: Pour chocolate sauce over dry ingredients and mix well.

  • Step 5: Then add the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla.

  • Step 6: Pour into greased large jelly roll pan.

  • Step 7: Bake for 20 minutes.

  • Step 8: While cake is hot, frost with this frosting:

  • Step 9: Bring margarine, cocoa and buttermilk to boiling point.

  • Step 10: Remove from heat and add rest of ingredients.

  • Step 11: Frost.

  • Step 12: When cool, cut into squares.

  • Step 13: Makes 30 large squares.
