  • 2/3 cup prunes, chopped, pitted
  • 2/3 cup buttermilk
  • Dry
  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Frosting
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons prune juice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a mixing bowl, cream shortening.

  • Step 2: Add sugar, cream and eggs, beat well.

  • Step 3: In another bowl, whisk (soft) dry ingredients.

  • Step 4: Add alternately with sour milk (buttermilk) to creamed mixture.

  • Step 5: Add chopped prunes.

  • Step 6: Bake in 2 waxed paper-lined 9 inch cake pans for 25 minutes at 350°F.

  • Step 7: Cream butter, add prune juice and lemon juice, salt, and cinnamon.

  • Step 8: Beat in powdered sugar gradually.

  • Step 9: Use to frost cooled cake.
