Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 10 cups water
  • 1 pound of dried navy beans
  • 1 pound salt pork
  • 1 whole onion
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup

  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon hot chili flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or more to taste
We recommend you get your ingredients ready before you start cooking. Once you're ready, here are the steps to making this delicious recipe

How to Make

  • Step 1: Soak the beans overnight in 6 cups of water.

  • Step 2: In the morning, drain and rinse the beans and place them in a large pot. Pour 4 cups of water into the pot and bring to a boil, over medium-high heat.

  • Step 3: Once the water starts to boil, reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 30 minutes.

  • Step 4: Once the beans have simmered for 30 minutes, pour the contents into a crock pot.

  • Step 5: Cut a cross, about 1/4 of the way, on the top and bottom of the onion and place it in the crock pot.

  • Step 6: Add the remaining ingredients and cook over low heat for 6 to 8 hours or until the beans are soft. Check the crock pot every so often, to see if you need to add water.

  • Step 7: Once the beans are cooked to your desired consistency, remove and discard the onion.

  • Step 8: Remove the salt pork, tear it apart with a fork, and return it to the beans. Stir and serve.

  • Step 9: *NOTE* You don’t want the beans to dry up as they will be hard and not edible, so make sure to take a peek every so often to see if they need a bit more water. This will depend on your crock pot; they all cook differently.
