Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 5 ounces sour cream, (1/3 cup)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon lemon peel, freshly zested
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • Topping
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter, cold
  • 6 tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup walnuts, chopped

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

  • Step 2: Lightly grease an 8” square cake pan.

  • Step 3: Beat the sugar and butter together with an electric mixer set at medium speed for 2 minutes or until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

  • Step 4: Add the applesauce, sour cream, egg and lemon peel and beat the ingredients for 2 minutes or until smooth.

  • Step 5: Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg into a bowl.

  • Step 6: Add half the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and beat until well blended.

  • Step 7: Add half the milk and beat until well blended. Repeat until all the flour and milk have been used up.

  • Step 8: Pour the batter into the prepared pan.

  • Step 9: Combine the streusel topping ingredients and mix them with two knives until the mixture is mealy.

  • Step 10: Sprinkle over the batter.

  • Step 11: Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean.

  • Step 12: Let the cake cool in the pan 10 minutes. Says to remove cake from pan, this only works if you have a cake cover. lol
