  • Cake:
  • 1 (4-ounce) package of German chocolate
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Coconut-Pecan Frosting:
  • 1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 4 egg yolks, slightly beaten
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 (7-ounce) package flaked coconut
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped pecan or walnuts

How to Make

  • Step 1: CAKE: In a microwave, melt the chocolate and water on high for 1 1/2-2 minutes or till chocolate is almost melted, stirring after each minute; stir till chocolate if completely melted.

  • Step 2: Mix flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.

  • Step 3: Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl with electric mixer till light and fluffy; add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

  • Step 4: Stir in chocolate mixture and vanilla.

  • Step 5: Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.

  • Step 6: In another bowl, beat the egg whites till stiff peaks form; gently sir into batter and pour evenly into greased pans.

  • Step 7: Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or till done; cool for 15 minutes and remove from pans; then frost with Coconut-Pecan Frosting.

  • Step 8: COCONUT-PECAN FROSTING: Mix the milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks, and vanilla in a large saucepan and cook on medium heat for 12 minutes or till it is thickened and golden brown, stirring constantly.

  • Step 9: Remove from heat; add the coconut and pecans and mix well.

  • Step 10: Cool to room temperature and of desired spreading consistency.
