Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Set oven rack to second-lowest position. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
Step 2: In a bowl cream the butter with sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, beating after each addition.
Step 3: In another bowl sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Stir in half of the flour mixture to the creamed mixture; add milk and vanilla, then stir in remaining flour mixture.
Step 4: Bake for 25-30 minutes or until cakes tests done.
