Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • FOR PASTRY
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup almonds, ground
  • 5 ounces cold butter
  • 1 orange, grated zest only
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water, iced
  • FOR FILLING
  • 1 cup mincemeat (homemade or prepared)
  • 1 egg white, beaten
  • Confectioners' sugar

How to Make

  • Step 1: To make the pastry: in a food processor add the dry ingredients (flour - sugar) to the bowl and then pulse 8-10 times or until mixture resembles crumbs. Add egg yolk and water and process for another 10-20 seconds or until dough comes together.

  • Step 2: On a floured work surface, add dough and form dough into a ball and then flatten it to a disk and cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  • Step 3: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  • Step 4: On a floured work surface, roll out dough to 1/8 inch thick round and with a 4 inch cookie cutter out out 18 rounds. Transfer rounds to into the cups of standard tart pans (if not use cookie sheets or muffin pans). Reroll remaining pastry and with a star-shaped cookie cutter, cut out 18 stars.

  • Step 5: Spoon mincemeat into the shells and top each one with a star. Brush pastry stars and tart edges with the egg white. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until pastry is golden and filling is bubbling. Remove from oven and transfer to a wire rack and let cook for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar.
