The ingredients are:
  • 4 ounces Baker's German's sweet chocolate (= 1 packaged square)
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 egg yolks, unbeaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2½ cups cake flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 egg whites

How to Make

  • Step 1: Melt chocolate in the boiling water. Cool.

  • Step 2: Cream butter and sugar.

  • Step 3: Add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each.

  • Step 4: Add chocolate and vanilla.

  • Step 5: Sift together the salt, soda, and flour and add alternately with the buttermilk to the chocolate mixture, beating well after each addition.

  • Step 6: Beat till batter is smooth.

  • Step 7: Beat whites until they form stiff peaks and fold into batter.

  • Step 8: Pour into three 8- or 9-inch layer pans, lined on bottom with paper.

  • Step 9: Bake at 350' F. for 30-40 minutes.

  • Step 10: Cool, and then frost on the tops.
