Step 1: Melt chocolate in the boiling water. Cool.
Step 2: Cream butter and sugar.
Step 3: Add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each.
Step 4: Add chocolate and vanilla.
Step 5: Sift together the salt, soda, and flour and add alternately with the buttermilk to the chocolate mixture, beating well after each addition.
Step 6: Beat till batter is smooth.
Step 7: Beat whites until they form stiff peaks and fold into batter.
Step 8: Pour into three 8- or 9-inch layer pans, lined on bottom with paper.
Step 9: Bake at 350' F. for 30-40 minutes.
Step 10: Cool, and then frost on the tops.
