Step 1: In a saucepan over medium heat melt the butter and than add the milk and heat to lukewarm and take off of heat. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water.
Step 2: In a bowl beat together the egg and sugar and then stir in the cardamom and salt. Stir in milk mixture and yeast mixture and then bet in half of the flour and then stir in enough of the remaining flour to hold mixture together. Turn out on floured board and knead until smooth - dough should be soft and a little sticky. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or towel and let rise in a warm place for 1 1/2 -2 hours or until doubled.
Step 3: Punch dough down, knead and divide it into 16 pieces. Roll these into round buns; cover with a bowl and let rise until doubled.
Step 4: Heat oil in deep fryer to 350-360 degrees F. Drop buns/doughnuts into hot oil, turn once until golden brown and drain them off pier towels and then roll them on a plate filled with sugar. Repeat with remaining buns/doughnuts.
