Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 200 grams sugar
  • 85 grams butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 100 ml buttermilk (or plain yogurt)
  • 700 grams flour
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • Lemon zest from 1/2 lemon
  • Vegetable oil for frying

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a bowl of an electric mixer cream together the butter and sugar and then whisk in the egg and buttermilk.

  • Step 2: In another bowl combine half of the flour with the rest of the dry ingredients (baking powder - lemon zest) and stir mixture into wet ingredients to make a dough, adding more flour until dough is no longer sticky.

  • Step 3: On a floured board knead dough until smother and then divide it into 2 pieces. Roll each piece out onto a floured board. Cut into 3 cm wide strips and then cut each strip diagonally into 6 pieces. Cut a slit in each piece and pull the top corner of the piece through the slit.

  • Step 4: In a deep fryer and large skillet heat the vegetable oil or fat (Crisco or Lard) to 180 degrees C and fry the bows, a few at a time for about 2 minutes on each side, turning once or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
