Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1 1/4 cup milk (low-fat is okay but do not use fat-free skim)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract (or 1 teaspoon almond extract)
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar (white sugar)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • FOR TOPPING
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup cup brown sugar (divided)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup melted butter (divided - 1/3 cup each pan)
  • Walnuts or pecans (chopped - optional)

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  • Step 2: Grease two 8 or 9-inch round cake pans or one 13 x 9-inch baking pan.

  • Step 3: In a medium or large bowl combine the milk, egg and vanilla and sugar; add in the flour, baking powder and salt, gently mix using a wooden spoon until just combined (careful not to overmix).

  • Step 4: Pour/divide evenly into prepared pan/s.

  • Step 5: Sprinkle/divide the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture over the top of the two pans, then drizzle the melted butter (1/4 to 1/3 cup for each pan) over the brown sugar/cinnamon mixture

  • Step 6: Top with chopped nuts if using.

  • Step 7: Bake for 20–25 minutes for 8 or 9-inch round pans, and about 30 minutes for 13 x 9-inch pan.

  • Step 8: Drizzle warm cake with glaze if desired.
