Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • Amounts are just for show - use each ingredient to your taste.
  • 1 cup ice (shaved, maybe your fridge makes shaved or finely crushed ice?)
  • 1/4 cup syrup (flavored, your choice, I like Torani raspberry!)
  • 1/4 cup powdered milk
  • 1/3 cup vanilla ice cream (in Costa Rica, I liked "Rompope", like eggnog with crystallized fruit bits!)
  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • Straw (1 Pirouette-type cookie straw)
We recommend you get your ingredients ready before you start cooking. Once you're ready, here are the steps to making this delicious recipe

How to Make

  • This is a do-your own thing kind of recipe. I've seen many variations of layers: 1) shaved ice, syrup, powdered milk, shaved ice, syrup, ice cream, syrup, condensed milk; or 2) ice cream, powdered milk, syrup, shaved ice, powdered milk, syrup, condensed milk; or 3) no ice cream at all, just layers of shaved ice, powdered milk syrup and condensed milk; or 4) a layer of diced fruit (pineapple, apple, grape, mango) in any of the other combos.

  • Step 1: Place a scoop of ice cream or shaved ice in the bottom of a plastic cup or parfait glass. Add the next layer - your choice - and then the next. Usually a bit of syrup is introduced to each layer, as well as a good tablespoon or two of powdered milk. The top layer can be ice cream or shaved ice.

  • Step 2: The final layer should be condensed milk. Pop the Pirouette into the glass, and serve with a straw and a spoon. Maybe a cherry on top, or a marshmallow. Imagine yourself in a tropical paradise, surrounded by mountainous rainforest and hearing the waves lap at your feet...

  • I personally LOVE the powdered milk, and probably use at least 1/4 cup total among several layers. It is soooo good!!! Sometimes, when I'm feeling lazy, I'll just have a small scoop of ice cream in a bowl, top with powdered milk, then top with condensed milk and a cherry. Yum!
