Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 2 tablespoons oil, divided (vegetable oil)
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground turkey
  • 2 yellow onions, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons cumin seeds, toasted and ground
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup chili sauce, tomato based
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 green pepper, finely chopped, optional
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, minced, optional
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 6 bread buns (onion buns)

How to Make

  • Step 1: In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium heat for 30 seconds.

  • Step 2: Add turkey and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink.

  • Step 3: Using a slotted spoon, transfer to slow cooker stoneware.

  • Step 4: Drain and discard liquid from pan.

  • Step 5: Add remaining oil to pan. Add onions and cook, stirring until softened, about 3 minutes.

  • Step 6: Add garlic, cumin, oregano, salt and pepper and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.

  • Step 7: Add chili sauce and bring to a boil.

  • Step 8: Transfer mixture to slow cooker stoneware.

  • Step 9: Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours, until mixture is hot and bubbly.

  • Step 10: Add cheese, peppers, Worcestershire sauce and paprika.

  • Step 11: Cover and cook on high for 20 minutes, until pepper is softened.

  • Step 12: Spoon over split onion buns and serve.
