  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups water (boiling)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

How to Make

  • Step 1: Cut dates into small pieces and place in a bowl.

  • Step 2: Add baking soda to boiling water and pour over dates in bowl.Set aside and let mixture stand.

  • Step 3: With a mixer,

  • Step 4: Cream butter and sugar together. Add the egg.

  • Step 5: Strain water from the date mixture into the creamed sugar and egg mixture.

  • Step 6: Add flour and beat well.

  • Step 7: Add nuts, dates and vanilla.

  • Step 8: Pour the mixture into two greased loaf pans.

  • Step 9: Bake for one hour in a 350F oven.
