Step 1: Dissolve the yeast in 1/2 cup warm water in a small bowl, and let stand for 5 minutes or until foamy.
Step 2: In a bowl combine the flour with next 4 ingredients .
Step 3: Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add yeast mixture and buttermilk to flour mixture; stir just until moist.
Step 4: Cover and chill 1 hour.
Step 5: Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Step 6: Grease a large baking sheet.
Step 7: Set oven rack to second-lowest position.
Step 8: Turn the dough out onto a heavily floured surface; knead lightly 5 times.
Step 9: Roll dough to about 3/4-inch thickness; cut with a 2-1/2-inch biscuit cutter.
Step 10: Place the biscuits on a baking sheet.
Step 11: Brush the melted butter over the biscuit tops.
Step 12: Bake for 12 minutes or until golden.
