Step 1: Preheat oven to 340°F. Line a 9 inch cake tin with parchment paper, set aside.
Step 2: In a small bowl, mix the ground almonds with the grated lemon peel and 1/2 cup of sugar. Set aside.
Step 3: In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with the 6 tbsp. of sugar.
Step 4: Melt the butter, then add the melted butter, the flour and the baking powder to the egg mixture. Beat well.
Step 5: Pour the mixture into the cake tin. Press the sliced apples vertically into the mixture, pushing them right down into the pan so they are covered. You may want to lay the top layer horizontally, so it makes a nice presentation when finished.
Step 6: Sprinkle with the mixture of sugar, almond and lemon.
Step 7: Bake for approximately 1 hour. Let rest for about 10 minutes, then looses sides with a knife. Invert onto a rack, then invert again onto a serving platter.
Step 8: Can be served while still slightly warm, or when completely cool. If desired, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
