Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

How to Make

  • Step 1: Mix first 5 ingredients thoroughly.

  • Step 2: Sift dry ingredients together and blend. Chill dough.

  • Step 3: Heat oven to 400 degrees.

  • Step 4: Drop dough by teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart on a lightly greased baking sheets. (Cookies will spread during baking.)

  • Step 5: Bake about 8 minutes or until almost no imprint remains when touched lightly. While slightly warm frost with vanilla or lemon icing.
