  • 1 1/2 cups butter
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • FOR TOPPING
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

How to Make

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  • Step 2: Melt butter and add molasses, sugar and eggs. Beat well.

  • Step 3: Sift together the flour, soda, cinnamon, ginger and cloves, then add to the butter/molasses mixture.

  • Step 4: Refrigerate the dough for several hours.

  • Step 5: Break off pieces of the dough (heaping teaspoon sized) and roll into small balls.

  • Step 6: Roll the balls in sugar.

  • Step 7: Place on an ungreased cookie sheet about 1 1/2-inches apart.

  • Step 8: Bake until firm and brown, about 8-10 minutes.
