Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350F ( for a dark colored pan, reduce the heat to 340).
Step 2: Mix the nuts, 1/3 cup sugar and cinnamon together- set aside.
Step 3: In a stand mixer, cream the butter then add 1 cup of the sugar - beat until thick and light in color.
Step 4: Add the egg- beat well.
Step 5: Sift together the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.
Step 6: Add the dry mixture to the mixing bowl, alternate with the milk - Mix until well combined.
Step 7: Butter an 8 x 8 " pan - Pour half the batter into the pan- sprinkle half the nut mixture over- then pour the other half of the batter on top- finish with the rest of the nut mixture.
Step 8: Bake for approx 25 minutes or until a tester comes at clean.
Step 9: Let cool in the pan, set on a cooling rack.
